Cow Klatch at the Water Tank
On stormy days I like to paint in my studio. I decided to pick a different scene to paint, one I have seen many times on farms and ranches driving around in rural areas. Unfortunately the windmills that used to be so common for pumping water on ranches and farms are being torn down, or have fallen into disrepair. This one on a ranch along Highway 1, south of Cambria, California still works and draws a daily crowd. I decided to call the painting Cow Klatch at the Water Tank because it reminded me we often gather at coffee spots for a coffee klatch. The painting is 12”X16” and framed in a rustic frame with Conservation Clear Glass. Price $700.00
The Light of a New Day
After visiting the majestic Grand Canyon at the end of a three week road trip I wanted to paint the majesty I viewed. In two days spent at the canyon, the sun only came to for five minutes, but those five minutes were early in the morning and the effect was spectacular. I wanted to attempt to paint the sheer beauty and size of the Grand Canyon, and with this painting, I feel I have succeeded in capturing one of its moods.
The painting is 16"X22" and custom matted and framed in a 22"X28" custom inlaid frame.
The Light of a New Day was judged Best Pastel by Judge Catherine Saks in Plain Air Magazine's 7th Annual Salon Competition.
The Majestic Canyon and its Colors
The Grand Canyon is a most awe inspiring National Park. When one stands on the rim and views the vastness of the canyon, the erosion that has occurred over millions of years it takes one's breath away. Then one also sees the myriad number of colors in the bands of rock on its weathered walls and the trees and vegetation anchoring on its ledges. A marvel of our beautiful country that has challenged many an artist to attempt to capture the beauty they see. Here you have another of my attempts to portray its beauty.
The painting is 24"X18" on Colourfix paper triple matted and framed in a custom Mahogany colored 30"X24" wood frame.
Spring Storm on the Ranch
On the way home from lunch in Marysville with friends, I noticed how the storm clouds were hanging in the foothills and tuned off on a side road shortly after the little town of Sheridan. I took some photos of the stormy clouds across a local ranch. When I decided to paint the scene, I thought it needed more interesting barns and so I used some reference photos from barns I had taken near Petaluma.
The pastel is 12X16 and double matted and framed in a custom 18"X24" frame.

When I was a young man traveling through the north eastern portion of Arizona on the way to Monument Valley I could see dark black thunderclouds in the distance and since we were riding in a convertible, we could hear the thunder booming. Sunny Point Lobos
On a trip to Monterey, Pacific Grove and Carmel for a four day getaway, my wife and I enjoyed driving the beautiful Highway 1 all the way to Big Sur. On the following day we decided to spend some time at Point Lobos State Park. lI had never been to this amazing seaside State Park and enjoyed several hours hiking the trails in the park that ran along the shores and climbed the picturesque cliffs overlooking the sea. This was one of my favorite views of the tree covered rugged coastline there. Old growth forests cling to rocky spots along the coast and provide shade and beauty for hikers in this beautiful park.

Rocky Shores of Point Lobos
A four day getaway to Carmel, Pacific Grove and points south was all I needed to make me want to paint some of the beautiful coastal scenes. This particular scene is from an overlook at Point Lobos State Park looking towards Carmel and Monterey Peninsula in the distance. The day before it had been raining and some storm clouds were still present. The sea was fairly rough and the surf on the rocks was great to watch and so I decided i would paint this view.

Low Tide at Haystack Rock
Haystack Rock is a massive rock off the coast of Cannon Beach that has been left standing because of the density of the rock. The waves and storms could not wash it away. It looks very much like Morro Rock found at Morrow Bay, California. A stark sentinel standing off the shore of Cannon Beach. Cannon Beach, Oregon is one of the most beautiful and picturesque coastlines on the west coast. One of my very favorites. My wife and I spent several wonderful cool days at this beach and town enjoying the scenery and also roaming through the stores and galleries in the town. When we returned home to a heat wave, I painted this view in my studio as a cool foggy reminder of that special time.
Size 12X18 matted and framed in a dark wood frame. Price $900
Morning Walk on Cannon Beach
I love this area and quaint town of Cannon Beach. It is some of the most picturesque coastline in all of Oregon. Haystack Rock stands like a monolith just outside the surf line, and gulls dive for fish and seals cavort in the waters. It is a place to defuse, slow down, and smell the wonderful sea air, hear the cries of the gulls, and the soothing sounds of the sea. In the early mornings the beach is pretty deserted but by mid morning in the summer months its is crowded with vacationing families. I like to think of myself walking my dog along this beach before the crowds arrive soaking up that wonderful solace that flows by the seashore. I painted this view in my studio from reference photos I took while there.
12X15 framed in driftwood grey frame with Conservation Clear glass. Price $700
Stormy Seas at the Rookery
On a trip last month to Pismo we had a rainstorm early in the morning before we were to leave. We decided to get some views of the coast before we left and noticed there were very large waves rolling in. As we travelled down to Shell Beach so I could show my wife the Pelicans on the rookery I noticed the spray was breaking forty feet into the air as it crashed on the rocks. I travelled a little further up the coast to try and capture the view looking south and painted this scene from my reference photos.
18* X 24" double matted and framed in a custom wood frame with conservation glass. $1800
The Soothing Sounds of the Sea
My wife and I love to escape to Bodega Bay during hot weather. Since that wasn't possible during a recent heat wave, I went through some photos I took on our last trip in May and selected a scene that I wanted to paint. This particular scene takes me to a cool place where I can hear the seagulls shrill cries, the crash of the waves on the rocks and the swish as the waves roll into the sandy beach. A soothing place, hence my title for the piece. 21"X26"

Fall Reflections on the Yuba
This past fall I had been plagued with Sciatica and it really affected my ability to take a ride in the car or sit for any length of time. One Friday when I felt much better my wife and I went for a drive up old Highway 49, I wanted to see the fall colors on the Yuba River and we drove up to Oregon Creek campground and pulled into a parking space. I walked down by the river and began taking photographs of the rocks and the looking down river saw the beautiful reflections in the placid water as it rounded a curve. I shot a few pictures and made notes about color and knew I wanted to paint his.

The Music of the Yuba
8I love to see and hear water rushing and gurgling over rocks, it is like natures music. I am especially challenged to paint water and capture its movement, eddies, flow and beauty rushing over rocks in its path. When it is a clear flowing river, one can also see the rocks under the water and as an artist I want to recreate that special place I am inspired to paint for other viewers to experience. This rocky glen was on the Yuba River not far from Camptown. I hope you enjoy my effort. The painting received an Award of Merit at the Sierra Pastel Society’s Pastels on High International show..

Colorful Blooms at the Pond
One morning recently when I went out to feed my Koi in the pond I realized how pretty it looked with lilies blooming in the pond and flowers all around it also blooming. I went into my studio and grabbed my sketch book and camera and took a few photos and then began sketching the pond from the angle I wanted to paint it.
I set up my easel and began working and the colors were coming together nicely. Unfortunately the heat was rising exponentially also and I finally packed up and moved indoors into my studio to continue working. Triple digit heat is not my cup of tea! I finished the painting working outside en plein air and also inside my studio when it got too hot.

While driving Colorado highway 82 at the 10,000 foot level we stopped at Twin Lakes reservoir which had been drawn down in the late season. When I returned home to my studio, that is how I painted it.
