The Light of a New Day
After visiting the majestic Grand Canyon at the end of a three week road trip I wanted to paint the majesty I viewed. In two days spent at the canyon, the sun only came to for five minutes, but those five minutes were early in the morning and the effect was spectacular. I wanted to attempt to paint the sheer beauty and size of the Grand Canyon, and with this painting, I feel I have succeeded in capturing one of its moods.

Rocky Mountain High
Beautiful Colorado mountains, this scene reminded me of John Denver's song Rocky Mountain High, and that seemed an appropriate name for the piece. I was on a Rocky mountain high the entire time I drove through those glorious mountain roads.

The Glow of Sunlight
This is a 5'X7" miniature pastel painting of Smith Creek and the surrounding trees and meadow. It was near the town of Mohawk off Highway 89 in northern California.

This old house is on a an old seaside farm south of the town of Mendocino. The barns and buildings stand vacant. The original farmhouse across the highway is restored and occupied.

Driving through Santa Paula's agricultural outskirts brings surprises at every turn. When I saw this beautiful vista and wash of color I just had to paint it. The painting itself is 22" X 28" and custom double matted and frames is 32" X 40".

When I was a young man traveling through the north eastern portion of Arizona on the way to Monument Valley I could see dark black thunderclouds in the distance and since we were riding in a convertible, we could hear the thunder booming. Shortly after as I passed over a bridge and pulled to the side of the road I witnessed a wall of water rushing down a dry wash. I tried to capture that scene in this painting. It is 12" X 16" matted and framed in a black 16" X 20" frame.
Morning Sun on Monument Valley
This 18" X 24" soft pastel of beautiful Monument Valley was painted from reference slides in my collection. The evening before thunderstorms had rolled through the area and brightened the desert's sandstone colors. The pastel is matted and framed in a 24" X 30" Pecan Wood frame.

A Summer Day in the Woods
I painted this plein aire in June 2012. This is a path through the woods not far from home where I walk my dogs on every day. The pastel is 9½″×12½″ on La Carte pastel paper. It is double matted and framed in a 1" mahogany frame.
A Walk Along the Beach
This seascape was painted from reference photos viewing north from the Bodega Bay Headlands. Always a windy spot the surf can be heard crashing on the rocks while the gulls utter their shrill cries.

Foggy Day at Pigeon Point
Pigeon Point Lighthouse is on a rocky promontory on the northern California coast above Santa Cruz. This lighthouse like many guards a very rocky area of the coast. Even on a foggy day the sound of the sea crashing on the rocks, the smell of the salt air and the cries of the seagulls is calming.

Sunrise from Denny Island, B.C.
This quiet and colorful scene was the sunrise I viewed from a cove on Denny Island at low tide on the morning we were leaving this beautiful place. It was a scene I wanted to paint and remember the quiet solitude I felt in this sparsely settled wilderness area populated mostly by Heiltsuk Indians.

Foggy Morning at the Lagoon in Pismo
Last summer we were able to go to Pismo Beach and stay at our RV for a week. One foggy morning I went up on the bluff overlooking the lagoon and sketched this scene first on a 4" X 5" format, and then on a 9"×12" piece of Wallis sanded paper. I put down the basic colors and took some photos for reference. I finished it this past week sitting out on my deck. I hope you enjoy the quiet morning view I enjoyed, and watching the waterfowl activity in the lagoon.
Twilight on Pismo Lagoon
This soft pastel painting is on Wallis sanded paper. The painting is 12" X 18" and is framed with mats to 18" X 24". Streams, Rivers & Lakes
In an October 2015 visit to Sedona, Arizona to enjoy the painted buttes and canyons surrounding the town, we stopped to hike in Red Rocks County Park. I walked along Oak Creek and finally found a lovely setting where Castle Rocks were reflected in the mirror waters of Oak Creek The painting is 16"X23" and framed in a custom oak frame.
Fall Comes to Clear Creek Colorado
During a road trip to visit the rockies and National Parks we enjoyed three days exploring the backroads in the rockies above Arvada, Colorado. This colorful fall scene along Clear Creek called to to be painted. This is a miniature landscape 5"X7" in size and matted and framed in a custom frame.
While driving Colorado highway 82 at the 10,000 foot level we stopped at Twin Lakes reservoir which had been drawn down in the late season. It was a beautiful view of Mt Harvard and Mt La Plata from the shore. I thought it would be far more beautiful if the lake was full and the mountains reflected their majesty in the lake. When I returned home to my studio, that is how I painted it.

A Light Dusting of Snow
Hope Valley California, south of lake Tahoe, is one of my favorite places. I love the rugged Sierra wilderness scenery viewed all around. This pastel is painted down in the valley as the Carson River comes into and winds through this beautiful one time pasture for an abandoned ranch. The pastel is 12"X16" on Dakota Premier paper, double matted and framed in a black 16"X20" wood frame.
Spring flow on the Yuba River
This original pastel is of the middle fork of the Yuba River near Oregon Creek campground. The spring run-off is running well after the rains. The pastel is 16"X12" double matted and framed in a Grey wood frame.
As we started home leaving the hamlet of Mohawk on Highway 89, we crossed over a bridge in the early evening as the sun was starting to set. The meadow by Smith Creek and many trees were lit up by the sun's golden rays.

This waterfall is just North of Rainbow Lodge off Highway 40. The snow melt swells the tributaries of the Yuba River and creates waterfalls as it courses down the mountain.

Twilight on the Savannah River
Evening comes softly along the Savannah River, and as the sun goes down, the birds feed on many of the flying insects over the marsh. This painting is 12" X 15" and double matted and framed in a 16" X 20" frame.

This scene is looking north west near 7474 Silverado Trail, Napa, California. I loved the colors in the vineyard and painted a contrasting sky with fall showers and fog creeping over the mountains as I have often seen it. A Glorious Day's End

Evening Sun's Glow
The Napa Valley is so very beautiful in any season, but in the fall when the vineyards and trees turn, the valley looks like a gigantic colored carpet. The setting sun's rays brightened the colors in the valley while there was a rainstorm working its way over the coastal range. New Life on the Vines
This winery, Silver Oak is on the outskirts of St. Helena off of Highway 29. I loved seeing the new growth sprouting on the vines. I sold one of my series of Napa Vally paintings and I thought I would do another one. This is a 12"×16" pastel and framed out to 16 "×20" with matting, in a Pecan frame.

Old & New Vines
This is another in a series of paintings I have done on the wine country. This one of the old barn and old vines was painted in the spring and mustard was blooming in the foreground. New vines are in rows in the background. It can be seen along Highway 29 in Napa County wine country, California. It is a soft pastel 12"×16" and matted and framed in a 16" X 20" Pecan Frame.
A Fine Old Vintage
This pastel I entitled A Fine Old Vintage is of a 1928 Chevrolet One Ton Flatbed truck that still runs. It is used by Boeger Vineyard in El Dorado County. I saw the truck while I was scouting for good painting subjects on a photo trip and thought it would make a great subject. The pastel painting is 9" X 12" and matted and framed in a 14" X 18" black frame.

A Good Nesting Site
Driving along Highway 70 towards Portola I saw the bright foliage along the river and stopped to take some pictures. As I got closer I saw two Canada Geese sitting on a a promontory of sticks and bull rushes as if checking it out for a nesting site. I combined my photos into this painting which is 14" X 18" and framed in a burlwood frame.
Catching Some Sun
I saw a beautiful Great White Egret perched on some rocks while I was out for a morning walk around a lake that is close by my home. I snapped a few pictures of him and decided he would make a great painting.
Lunch on Ice
I love these friendly Black Capped Chickadees because they are both colorful and friendly. I painted this one as a Christmas greeting to artist friends.It is 7" X 9" framed in an 11" X 14" frame.
After a snowfall, the birds waited their turn to get to our feeders. This Junco and others who are normally ground feeders were eating seed at the bird feeders. The original pastel is 5"X7" double matted in an 8"X10" Frame Price $135.00
Purple Finches are actually more red than purple. They flock to home feeders in backyards all over America. This one was perched on a branch waiting for his turn at the feeder. The soft pastel is 7" X 9" and matted and framed in a 9" X 12" frame.
A Safe Perch
The Rufos Sided Towhees are ground feeders, but when startled they seek refuge in bushes that offer cover and concealment. This soft pastel is 7" X 9" matted and framed in a 9' X 12" frame.
Surveying His Kingdom
While my wife and I were spending some time around Capitola, CA, we stopped at an estuary south of town that was a bird sanctuary. I saw this beautiful Great White Egret perched in a fallen Eucalyptus surveying the area. I painted the resultant pastel that is 24" X 18" from reference photos I took. The pastel is framed in a 30" X 24" Mahogany frame.
The painting took a Meritorious Mention in the Richeson International online Art show in 2013.
I saw this pair of geese safe on a rocky point of a local pond, but when danger threatened, the mother goose was on high alert and gathered her brood under her. When danger passed she settled down covering her chicks with her wings. It was a difficult subject to do with a 9" × 12" soft pastel. The painting is matted and framed in a 14" X 18" Mahogany frame.
We saw many Cardinals when we were visiting my son in Atlanta Georgia. I photographed them and painted this one in my studio when I returned home.

This Curious Calf made a great painting subject. The painting is 12" square and double matted and framed in a custom oak frame with Clearvue glass.
Lunch Among the Aspens
I painted this scene in my studio combining the deer grazing outside my studio with Aspens I photographed in Hope Valley, south of Lakee Tahoe.

Barbados Black Belly Ram
I saw this beautiful ram in a pasture as I was buying some mandarins at a roadside stand. I walked over and took some pictures of him since he came up tot he fence. This young heifer calf was playing in a field with other calves and as I got closer to the fence stopped to look at me. I took some pictures of her and when I returned to my studio and reviewed my photographs, I thought she would make a great painting subject.

Elegance in Harness
I painted this beautiful team of Belgian Horses from reference photos I took at the Draft Horse Classic at Grass Valley Fairgrounds. The painting is 28"x 22" framed in a 34" X 28" frame. Price $1500
Tatanka is the Lakota Sioux word for Bull Buffalo. I felt it an appropriate title since these massive beasts were honored by plains Indian tribes and fed and clothed them for many years. My subject was a Buffalo at a local Buffalo Ranch near my home. The pastel painting is 18" X 24" and is matted and framed in a 25" X 28" frame.
Spring on the Open Range
These cows were grazing on the open range of a huge ranch in British Columbia, east of Lake Nicola. The pastel is 13"X18".
Listen Up Girls
This is a studio painting. I painted this to enter in the Meeker Art Show in Meeker Colorado. It was one of fifty paintings accepted into the show in 2013. The art show runs during the National Sheep trials in Meeker. The pastel is 10 X 13 1/2" matted and framed in a 16 X 20 wood frame.
